Critical Information about Service Source 2.0
Service Source 2.0 includes the main Service Source CD and the Service
Source Companion CD. All information on the main Service Source CD is in Adobe Acrobat documents. Before using the main CD for the first time, you must run the Acrobat Installer located on the main CD. The installer copies to your hard drive a new release of Acrobat Reader 2.1 that must be used to run Service Source properly.
The Acrobat Reader 2.1 Installer creates a folder on your startup drive called Adobe Acrobat and places Acrobat Reader, our Service Source plug-in, and additional plug-ins from Adobe into this folder. The Service Source plug-in and the plug-ins from Adobe extend the feature set of Acrobat Reader. (For more information about the plug-ins, refer to "About Acrobat Plug-ins" later in this document.)
Important: Service Source 2.0 is designed to run from a mounted CD. Copying partial contents of the CD to a local drive may invalidate the navigation and search features of Service Source 2.0. Refer to "Copying Service Source 2.0 to Your Hard Drive" and to "Setting Up a Network File Server with Service Source 2.0" later in this document for additional instructions.
Installation of Service Source 2.0
To install Service Source:
• Disable virus detection software
• Remove from your system
- Any previous version of Acrobat Reader
- Any Acrobat or Service Source preferences
• Double-click the Acrobat Installer alias and follow the onscreen instructions.
More about removing previous versions of Acrobat Reader
Service Source is designed to run with the version of Acrobat Reader 2.1 included on the CD. Before running the Acrobat Installer, remove other versions of the Reader.
More about removing Acrobat and Service Source preferences
Running Acrobat Installer installs the latest preferences in the Preferences folder inside your System Folder. To avoid conflicts with older preference files, we recommend removing any Acrobat Reader, Acrobat Search, or SS Preferences (Service Source) files from the Preferences folder before running the Acrobat Installer.
More about using the Acrobat Installer
After double-clicking the Acrobat Installer, follow these steps:
– Click Continue at the first two dialog windows.
– At the Acrobat installation setup window, make sure the desired drive appears as the Install Location. Then click Install.
– Click Restart to complete the installation.
Note: In addition to installing Acrobat Reader and plug-ins, the Acrobat Installer copies to your system the latest versions of QuickTime and the Adobe Type Manager.
Note: Installation requires at least 8.64 MB of free disk space.
Launching Service Source
Important: To use all of the Service Source navigation and search features, you must launch Service Source 2.0 from Acrobat Reader 2.1 with the Service Source plug-in installed.
To launch Service Source, follow these steps:
1. Make sure you have run the Acrobat Installer.
2. If Acrobat Reader 2.1 is the only version of Acrobat on your system, double click the Service Source Startup 2.0 icon.
3. If you have another version of Acrobat on your system (such as Acrobat Exchange), click and drag the Service Source Startup 2.0 icon (located on the CD-ROM) onto the Acrobat Reader 2.1 icon (located in the Adobe Acrobat folder on your startup drive). This launches Service Source from Reader 2.1.
Searching Service Source Content
All content on the main Service Source CD has been indexed and can be searched by selecting the index search icon on the Acrobat tool bar. (The index search icon depicts binoculars on top of a document.) Alternatively, you can select Search/Indexes... from the Tools menu.
The first time you click the index search icon, you will have to navigate to the index (called "Service Source index.pdx") and select it to use the search index function. To do this, from the search indexes dialog window
1. Click Indexes...
2. Click Add, and navigate to the index called "Service Source index.pdx," which is located at the top/root level of the Service Source CD.
3. Double-click the index (or select the index and click Add) to add it to the list of available indexes. Then click OK.
For information on how to use the search dialog, refer to the Help manual. Access the Help manual from the Service Source drop-down menu or by clicking the Help icon (depicts a question mark) near the right end of the Acrobat tool bar.
Note: When you initiate a search on either CD after having done a search on the other CD, the CD currently in the drive will eject and a dialog box will appear instructing you to insert the other CD. You DO NOT HAVE TO CHANGE CDs. Just click away the dialog box and reinsert the CD that ejected. This problem is caused by the search path established by the preferences document.
Copying Service Source 2.0 to Your Hard Drive
You can place the contents of the Service Source 2.0 CD-ROM onto your hard drive to improve the performance of Service Source. Keep in mind, however, that to retain the navigation and search features of Service Source 2.0, you must copy to your hard drive the complete contents of the CD, or you must retain the original file structure of all files copied to the hard drive and be sure to copy over the index folder and index file.
Note: Files copied to a local hard drive are not automatically updated with subsequent releases of Service Source CD and Online. By copying the files to a local hard drive, you are assuming responsibility for keeping the files current.
To set up and install Service Source on your local hard drive, follow these steps:
1. Install Service Source (run Acrobat Installer).
2. Copy the complete contents of the Service Source 2.0 CD ROM onto your local hard drive.
3. Remove the Acrobat Installer alias (it does not work from a hard drive).
For additional information on copying files to a hard drive, refer to the Help manual.
Setting Up a Network File Server with Service Source 2.0
You can place the contents of the Service Source 2.0 CD-ROM onto a Network file server so that users with access to the server can access Service Source information. To set up Service Source on a Network file server, follow the steps below.
Note: This procedure is supported on a Macintosh AppleShare file server only.
1. Copy the complete contents of the Service Source 2.0 CD-ROM onto the hard drive of the Network file server.
2. To prevent users from modifying the files within Service Source, give the folder with the Service Source files on the Network file server read-only access. To do this, go into AppleShare Admin and select the Privileges menu. Then select the menu item Access Information. In the Access Information dialog, check the boxes "See Folders" and "See Files" for users of the file server. Also check the box "Can't Move, Rename or Delete" and save this setup.
3. Remove the Acrobat Installer alias (it does not work from a local hard drive).
Installing Service Source 2.0 from a Network File Server
To view the contents of Service Source 2.0 from a Network file server, you must install Acrobat Reader 2.1 and the plug-ins that come with Service Source onto the client system. The Service Source plug-in creates a special environment for finding your way around Service Source, so we recommend installing it even if you already have Acrobat Reader.
1. Disable any virus detection software.
2. In the Chooser, select the AppleShare icon and then the Network file server that contains Service Source 2.0.
3. Install Acrobat Reader 2.1 from the Network file server. To do this, first open the Acrobat Reader folder and the DISK1 folder. Then double-click ACROREAD.MAC and follow the onscreen instructions.
Launching Service Source 2.0 from a Network File Server

3. If Acrobat Reader 2.1 is the only version of Acrobat on your system, double click the Service Source Startup 2.0 icon (located on the Network File server).
4. If you have another version of Acrobat on your system (such as Acrobat Exchange), click and drag the Service Source Startup 2.0 icon (located on the Network File server) onto the Acrobat Reader 2.1 icon (located in the Adobe Acrobat folder on your hard drive). This launches Service Source from Reader 2.1.
Known Bugs on Service Source 2.0
Issue 1
A version of the following message may appear on some pages:
"Some text in the font and character 'Geneva xxx' could not be displayed or printed correctly. The font could not be reencoded."
The exact cause of this message has not yet been determined. The pages seem to display and print as they should. This bug is still under investigation.
Issue 2
When you initiate a search on either CD after having done a search on the other CD, the CD currently in the drive will eject and a dialog box will appear instructing you to insert the other CD. You DO NOT HAVE TO CHANGE CDs. Just click away the dialog box and reinsert the CD that ejected. This problem is caused by the search path established by the preferences document.

About Service Source Plug-ins
The operation and use of Service Source 2.0 is enhanced by plug-ins that extend the capabilities of Acrobat Reader 2.1. These plug-ins, and especially our own Service Source plug-in, add navigation features unique to Service Source documents.
The plug-ins currently enabled for use with Acrobat Reader 2.1 and Service Source 2.0 are
• Service Source plug-in. Our plug-in creates the Service Source drop down menu for navigating to the main menu, the Safety document, the Help file, and to Service Source Online. The plug-in also creates Acrobat toolbar icons for navigating to the Help manual, the main menu, and Service Source Online.
• Acrobat Search. All Acrobat documents on Service Source are indexed and full text searchable. For more information, refer to "Searching Service Source Content" earlier in this document and to the Help manual.
• Acrobat Weblink. This plug-in enables us to provide a direct link to Service Source Online. You can access this link from the Service Source drop down menu and from the special icon on the Acrobat toolbar.
• Adjust Window. This plug-in enables open Acrobat files to be tiled on the desktop so you can see and navigate to them. Acrobat will keep up to 10 files open at a time.
• Acrobat AutoIndex. This plug-in automatically loads an index for the file you are opening, as long as the path to that index has been saved within the Acrobat file ahead of time.
• Acrobat Movie. This plug-in provides the same functionality as MoviePlayer.
